“Newark Mayor Cory Booker stirred the waters of two statewide political races Thursday, declaring he would not challenge Republican Gov. Chris Christie in 2013 and adding that he would explore a 2014 bid for a U.S. Senate seat currently held by a Democratic colleague.

“There is still a lot of work to do,” Booker said in a YouTube video he released Thursday. “And so, let there be no doubt, I will complete my full second term as mayor of Newark, New Jersey. And as for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for the United States Senate in 2014.”

The Senate seat up in 2014 is held by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

“As I explore a run for the United States Senate, I look forward to consulting with Sen. Frank Lautenberg,” Booker said in the video.
