“President Obama plans to nominate Deborah K. Jones as U.S. ambassador to Libya, he announced in a statement Wednesday.

Jones, a career member of the Foreign Service, would replace Chris Stevens, the ambassador killed in the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Jones has previously served as U.S. ambassador to Kuwait and is currently a scholar-in-residence at the Middle East Institute in Washington.

Secretary of State John Kerry is meeting Wednesday with Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan at the State Department to mark the six-month anniversary of the Benghazi attack.
