“A manhunt is underway in Canada after two prisoners broke out of a Quebec jail and hijacked a helicopter.

Police said Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau and Danny Provencal escaped from Saint-Jerome prison, about 50 kilometres north-west of Montreal.

An hour after the escape, police found the helicopter 85km north-west of the jail in the Mont Tremblant area, with the uninjured pilot still on board.

Police said they were looking for a “suspicious vehicle” and were focusing their search on the area around Lake Argile.

Radio Canada said Hudon-Barbeau is 36 and has ties to the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club, while Provencal is 33.

Media reports suggested the inmates held a gun to the pilot’s head.

He was taken to hospital and was being questioned.
