“France said Thursday around ten Islamist fighters and one Malian soldier had been killed in overnight fighting near Timbuktu airport in northern Mali.

Army spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said the Islamists had used a car bomb in the attack late on Wednesday, triggering clashes which continued until 7:00 a.m. (0700 GMT).

One Malian soldier was killed in the clashes and two others were lightly injured as a result of an airstrike by French planes, Burkhard added.

Burkhard also reported that 15 Islamist fighters had been killed in clashes in Gao, northern Mali, in recent days. After initial confusion, it transpired that these were the same casualties reported by the French army on Tuesday.
