President Obama: Palestinians Deserve an Independent State

by Colonel on March 21, 2013

“President Obama met with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank on Thursday in search of hopeful signs for the stalled peace process and declared that a sovereign state of Palestine beside Israel is still viable.

Following a long meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Obama said he thinks the two-state solution could occur if both sides would “think anew” about long-standing arguments that have stalled peace talks.

If the expectation is that “we can only have direct negotiations when everything is settled ahead of time,” Obama said, “then there’s no point in negotiations.”

In what U.S. officials took as a hopeful sign, Abbas listened politely and even nodded a little as Obama talked about setting aside the demand that there be a freeze on the building of Israeli settlements as a precondition for negotiations.

“ President Obama told Palestinians they “deserve an end to occupation” and an “independent state of their own,” during a visit Thursday to a territory that Palestinians want as a nation.

Back in Israel, Obama said the Jewish state is at a crossroads and must help create and independent Palestinian state for the secure future of Israel. He said Israel could not expect to remain safe without peace because “extremists” thrive on conflict.

“It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of their own,” he told hundreds of Israeli students in a speech. “Palestinians have a right to be free people in their own land.”

Following a two-hour visit with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Obama’s asserted that the borders for a Palestinian the state can only be settled through negotiations with Israel and that protect the national security of the Jewish state.
