U.S. State Department Designates Mali Rebel Group Ansar al-Dine as a Terrorist Organization

by Colonel on March 21, 2013

“Ansar al-Dine, the rebel group trying to topple the government in Mali, is a terrorist organization subject to sanctions, the State Department said Thursday.

The designation of Ansar al-Dine as a foreign terrorist organization makes it illegal to support the group financially, prohibits U.S. citizens from any transactions with the group and allows the federal government to freeze any of its U.S. assets.

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday listed the group as a terrorist organization, which requires all U.N. member countries to freeze the group’s assets and institutes an arms embargo.

Ansar al-Dine, established in late 2011 and led by Iyad ag Ghali, cooperates closely with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, another terrorist group operating in North Africa, the State Department said.
