President Obama Signs Stopgap Spending Bill to Fund Government Until September 30th

“President Barack Obama signed the temporary spending bill that will prevent a government shutdown. The Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013 funds the government for the last six months of the present fiscal year. …

White House spokesman Jay Carney said that the new bill extends funding levels that were agreed upon by both parties. Congress approved the measure last week. It maintains sequestration, which is the $85 billion worth of automatic budget cuts that took effect March 1. …

The Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2013 takes steps to ease the impact of the automatic budget cuts to college assistance for active duty military personnel and food inspection. It finds the day-to-day operating budgets of every Cabinet agency until September 30, which is the end of the 2013 fiscal year. It also provides $87 billion for overseas military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
